Low-flow Shower Head
The shower is a real water guzzler. It uses up to 30 percent of the total water used by a household. Reducing the amount of water that comes out of the showerhead is a smart way not only to reduce your water bill, but cut your energy costs as well. Given how cheap low-flow shower heads are and how expensive energy is the payback period on the cost of the showerhead can be as short as a few months.
Most non-conserving showerheads use 5 to 8 gallons of water per minute. That means a ten-minute shower would send about 50-80 gallons of fresh water down the drain. In comparison, low-flow showerheads use only 2.5 gallons per minute, or 25 gallons for a ten-minute rinse-off. The Real Goods Catalog company, which sells low-flow shower heads mail order, claims a family of four can save up to $250 a year.
